About Us

Who We Are

The Manufacturing Makes It Real Network is sponsored by North Carolina State University's Industrial Extension Service (IES). Created in 1955 within the NC State University College of Engineering by an act of the General Assembly, IES is the oldest service of its kind in the nation. Since 2006, IES has returned more than $1.06 billion in direct annual gain to the state, either in jobs saved or profits made, as reported by the clients served. IES, with the help of manufacturers across the state reached the $1 billion goal for North Carolina by the end of 2009, one year ahead of schedule. IES serves as the North Carolina center for the federal program, the Manufacturing Extension Partnership.

The Tour

In 2010 IES conducted the Manufacturing Makes It Real tour, a statewide bus tour to recognize manufacturers, their products, and especially their employees. At stops at 11 manufacturers across the state, manufacturers had the opportunity to show their products as well as tour a tractor trailer containing a mobile museum of over 300 donated Made in NC items. The MMIR Network grew out of this tour.
