Daetwyler in Huntersville Hosts Manufacturing Makes It Real Network

Third Network Event Attracts about 100 Manufacturers and Friends

presentation of Network banner to Ralph DaetwylerRalph Daetwyler welcomed about 100 manufacturers and friends of manufacturers to the company founded by his grandfather in Europe during the years following World War II. Since then, the company has changed from airplane renovator to high tech printer and more. They moved to the United States in 1975 and have been in their Huntersville location for 21 years.

But when he told the story about Daetwyler's program to grow an exemplary workforce, Apprenticeship 2000, the audience took note. High school students learn while they earn at the company, which amounts to "free college and a paycheck." In partnership with Central Piedmont Community College, the students graduate with an associate's degree, a journeyman card from the NC Department of Labor, and guaranteed employment at Daetwyler.

The good news continued as 15 manufacturers got in front of the group to share business connections made through the Network, new products about to roll out and the good news of increased sales and hiring. Some of the highlights included:

  • A new product from Mayo Knitting Mill in Belmont will be in stores such as Nordstrom's and Belk this fall. Noreen P. Ewald, national sales and marketing director, said to look for Boot-tights, a combination socks and tights highlighted recently on "Oprah" and "The View."
  • Eric Johnson from Freightliner pulled up to the building in a truck that rolled out the factory the day before. In one year, Freightliner has gone from 100 people making five trucks a day, to 1,500 people making 100 trucks a day.
  • Mark Seifel with Schneider Electric in Salisbury displayed a new product, a control panel to disconnect communication systems in a crisis, made with parts provided by Flextronics, a fellow Network member they connected with in the first event in April.

The Network is supported by manufacturers who join and receive promotional benefits and easy access to IES services. Network members include Keihin Carolina System Technology, Inc., Air Components & Systems, Cormetech, Inc., Diebold, Falcon Metal Corporation, Flextronics International, Glen Raven Technical Fabrics, Goulston Technologies, Inc., Max Daetwyler Corporation, NACCO Materials Handling Group, Schneider Electric USA, TE Connectivity, Wayne Brothers, Inc. and Wilmington Box Co.
